Why did I build this?

Short answer: I needed it and it was fun to build.

All started back in 2017, initially as two different projects, a desoldering station (which I immediately started calling Slurp because of the sound it makes when sucking the solder) and a picking tool, each mounted on a separate breadboard. One day I looked at the two breadboards and I was basically using the same components for both so I decided to combine them and I called it Slurp’nPick. Since the pump was quite powerful I decided to try dispensing solder paste and it worked, so I added this functionality as well. I later also added the blow and vacuum feature, with these many additional features I just added a ‘+’ at the end of the name, Slurp’nPick+. Because I already had enough dangling wires around my bench, I decided to integrate an earlier project I had made (wireless mail sensor) to the footswitch, turning it wireless. Later I created a more affordable version without desoldering capabilities,  Pick+.

If you want to read more about the history of this project you can check the Project history section on the instructions manual.

Do not need the desoldering feature?

  1. Christian Grams

I have to say that I have been looking for a desoldering station for a long time. It wasn’t the search for a desoldering station that caught my attention, but rather the controller for the BST 863, which is also brilliant. But now to my review. I ordered the all-round feel-good package, it’s a little expensive but worth every cent. I was also a bit surprised about the shipping costs but that also turned out to be absolutely reasonable. When I looked at the pictures, I thought that this station was the size of a shoebox. But when a very small, handy cube arrived, which also had a dent in one corner (see photo 1), I was surprised. Did only the accessories come? The station is coming later? So I unpacked the package and was so perplexed when I saw that the station was wrapped in extra bubble packaging (see photo 2). And she’s so tiny. All accessories were also included. Everything is labeled and you can tell that a lot of love was put into it. I couldn’t wait any longer, so I grabbed a few old circuit boards to get a feel for the desoldering gun. But something is wrong. If I use the vacuum connection on the right side, it draws a good vacuum. Only moderately on the pistol and the noises sound different. In short, I wrote to Stefan and asked. I have to say that I of course checked the hoses, filters and the chamber thoroughly beforehand. The very next morning Stefan’s answer was in my inbox. He said that a hose might have come loose during transport and that I should just take a look. To be honest, I didn’t have the courage to unscrew the little miracle piece. But if Stefan says, then I’ll do it. Here too you can see the attention to detail. The space is used absolutely sensibly, everything is arranged very clearly, the connecting cables are neatly tied together. Everything looks very tidy and well thought out. After I pushed the hose back in I was finally able to start desoldering. It is a true splendor. But that’s not the only thing – the Rubik’s Cube can do more. Quickly put the already paired buttons down and get started. The pick function is unique. So easy to use. The difference between pick and vacuum is that with a vacuum the valve remains closed and thus the negative pressure is maintained. Of course not forever, as there are certain leaks. This is due to the way the components are installed. You will notice that the pump also generates a lot of pressure when you switch to blowing. If you keep the nozzle closed, the hose sometimes flies out of the “handpiece” and then makes a decent popping noise. Quickly blow dust off the circuit board or blow out the keyboard, no problem. And that’s exactly where the genius lies in this little cube. When you desolder, you immediately have a “pick-up” at hand. But that’s still not the end. He also implemented a dispenser function. The kit includes a 30cc syringe and extensive accessories. Even an adapter to transfer from one syringe to the other. However, I only tested this function “dry” because I currently don’t have a project where I would have to assemble many SMDs in order to apply the solder paste. If you now look at the controls you can see how much thought Stefan put into implementing this project. Lovingly animated symbols, immediate change of mode when you press a button (wireless), sensibly arranged setup settings. He thought of a simple way to update the firmware. I haven’t tested the connection to the computer yet but I’d rather have it than need it. My conclusion is this: For currently under €400 including shipping you get a thoroughly thought-out product with which no projects are left open. It really is worth every penny. He just needs to do more advertising, I can well imagine that he’ll be run over. Kind regards from Berlin/Germany

First, I would like to thank Stefan for his support and patience. He always tries to respond as quickly as possible and is genuinely friendly.

Regarding the machine, I am truly impressed by its performance. For instance, when working with demanding tasks, such as handling transformers, I was able to desolder it in no time with minimal clogging. All the other features work well, and everything can be easily controlled through the menu on the screen. It is worth every penny it costs, and the addition of the wireless pedal is a brilliant idea that I highly recommend.

The only downside is the packaging box; it seems prone to breaking. Despite stefan wrapping it securely, I received it with a slight damage to the letter. I suggest that future versions use a sturdier material for the box.

I chose to wait before writing this evaluation to provide an honest and informed opinion. In summary, the product is well-designed and operates with high efficiency. I consider it one of my best purchases and recommend it wholeheartedly.

    Thank you,
    Mo
